Issue
Recently, Oracle JAVA SE licensing has changed and newer versions of Java are no longer free for commercial use.
Question
Does Chronicall still use Java? If so, how does this licensing change affect my installation of Chronicall?
Answer
Customers using Chronicall 3.10 and above
- On versions 3.10 and above, the actual Chronicall server uses an embedded version of Java that is not affected by the licensing changes
- This licensing change will only affect you if you are still using Internet Explorer and its included Java applet connection to access Chronicall
- Instead of using Internet Explorer to access Chronicall, please use our Chronicall Desktop application as it uses a built-in version of Java that is not affected by the licensing changes
- Instructions on how to install this application can be found here:
- On versions 4.0 and above you can access an HTML version of Chronicall through a web browser

Customers using Chronicall 3.9 and below
- On versions 3.9 and below, the actual Chronicall server relies on an external version of Java that is affected by the licensing changes
- Our recommendation is that anyone running these older versions upgrade their Chronicall software to a newer version (3.10 and above) so that they will not need to pay for the separate license
- NOTE: An active or updated Xima Care Subscription may be required to upgrade to newer supported versions
- We have detailed instructions on how to upgrading to newer versions, which can be found here:
